Beaches

Western Crete also benefits from some of the finest beaches on the island all of which can easily be explored and visited during your stay.

The very famous beach of Stavros (dramatic set of the film adaptation of Kazantzakis' 'Zorba the Greek') on the northern side of Akrotiri serves as a magnet to draw the crowds away from the much nicer and largely deserted western beach just around the corner.

There is only one taverna on the beach but the quality of Graeco/Franco/Afro- cooking (from the friendly Malikka) makes it by far one of the best in the area. Enjoying the delicious food under the palm parasols with the beautiful sounds of the crashing waves and a spectacular aquamarine coloured sea is unforgettable! 35 minutes by car.

Less than 10 minutes drive (30 minutes walk) from Douliana is the little fishing village of Almirida with its safe sandy beach, a selection of shops and tavernas and a variety of water-sports for the more adventurous.

Possibly even more famous than Stavros is the stunningly beautiful Balos bay on the western tip of Gramvousa. The drive to the taverna a mile above the bay is difficult and inadvisable, much easier to take one of the leisurely boat trips from Kissamos stopping off at the Venetian fortress before arriving at the beach itself. 50 minutes to Kissamos.
